Chain plans Dumfries store
RETAIL giant Debenhams is coming to Dumfries -- offering a jobs boost and support to High Street trade.
Set to occupy the former TJ Hughes store, the department store chain’s arrival is being hailed as a major boon to the local economy and to town centre regeneration efforts.
Confirming the company’s plans, a Debenhams spokeswoman yesterday said: “Yes we are actually opening a store in 2012 in Dumfries.”
She added: “It’s kind of hot off the press because it’s only just been agreed. So in terms of details, in terms of dates of openings, or any more information, we don’t have anything as yet.
“But we’re delighted to be opening a store in Dumfries and we’re excited about the job opportunities that are going to be opened up and about becoming part of the local community.”
The TJ Hughes store has sat empty since that company entered administration last June, and is owned by BAE Systems Pensions Fund.
Andy Chambers from the fund said: “We do own the property, and yes it is Debenhams that’s going to be the tenant, but in terms of what’s happening to it and when I haven’t got the foggiest.”
Workmen for Patton Fit-Out have been readying the store in recent weeks, identifying Debenhams as their client.
And Debenhams have newly submitted a planning application for a fascia and an illuminated wall sign on the store, along with aluminium cladding.
The 160-store chain was previously tipped as the main anchor for a £50 million 200,000 sq ft shopping centre planned to run from the High Street to Irish Street, but plans fell through when retail developer Centros pulled the plug on the project in April 2008.
Welcoming the company’s arrival, council leader Ivor Hyslop said: “I am delighted to hear that Debenhams Retail PLC has acquired the lease of the former TJ Hughes retail outlet in Dumfries.
“Debenhams is currently renovating the shop and I hope it will be ready soon. It is fantastic that Dumfries has managed to attract such a major retailer to the town and this will certainly boost the local economy.
“This is a huge step towards the redevelopment of Dumfries town centre.”
