'Scotland’s Schindler' remembered
A DUMFRIESSHIRE heroine was remembered on Friday by a local MP.
Dumfries and Galloway Labour MP Russell Brown paid tribute to a local woman nicknamed “Scotland’s Schindler” for trying to protect 400 Hungarian orphans during World War Two - an act of kindness that ultimately cost her life.
Dunscore Primary pupils joined the MP to lay the wreath for Jane Haining.
Mr Brown said: “Jane Haining was a remarkable and brave individual. She could have returned home to Scotland when the war began, but she stayed to try and protect the Hungarian orphans in her care. Her love and dedication to these children, who she refused to leave, ultimately cost her own life in the gas chamber at Auschwitz.
“The community of Dunscore are extremely proud of Jane’s heroism and they hold her memory dear to their hearts.”
