Calum to tell story of London Olympics
SPORTS fan Calum Graham is on his marks for next year’s Olympics.
For the 38-year-old, of Canonbie, has just found out that he has been selected as one of only 15 BT Storytellers and will be tasked to tell the tale of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Calum, who works as a sports development officer with Dumfries and Galloway Council, will join celebrities and athletes for his first mission next week, which will see him receive a guided tour around the Olympic Park in London followed by a champagne reception with stalwart Seb Coe.
He applied for the prestigious post after spotting an advert asking how members of the public would tell the story of the Games on a local level.
After making the shortlist he had to complete a further application before he conducted a telephone interview.
Explaining his selection, Calum said: “I said I would use my job to inspire kids to take part in sport in the run up to Olympics.
“We also hope to have an Olympic Museum in Annan Museum and to organise Olympic events for kids to take part in.”
He added: “I could not believe it when I found out I had been selected. I didn’t think I stood a chance but they must have thought my job would help to promote the Olympics in Annandale and Eskdale.”
Over the next year Calum will be contributing to and participating in the story of the build-up to the Games as well as attending exclusive events and rubbing shoulders with celebrities and athletes.
And having been selected to cover the track cycling, swimming and track and field events he is also hopeful of bumping into his hero Chris Hoy.
“From what I believe there will be loads of events between now and up until the Paralympics are over,” he added.
“Somebody mentioned we may get to interview athletes after they’ve competed and we will be writing for the BT Olympic website and some of the papers.”
The Olympic selection rounds off a busy year for Calum, who was also invited to attend the Miss Scotland Final 2011 last month, but when he was asked which was better he joked ‘no comment’.
