Sponsors secure cycle race future
NEW sponsors mean this year’s Tour DoonHame will go ahead, to the relief of organisers.
However, the cycle race event will be reduced to two days, instead of three, and held on Easter Sunday and Monday.
Organiser Ian Sinclair this week said: “After a testing time consolidating and attracting new sponsors it is with great relief that we can announce that this year’s event will go ahead with a two day event, headquartered in Dumfries.
“The format of the event will change slightly due to the reduction in budget but the quality and freshness of the stages will be up to our normal high standards.”
Stage one will start from Castle Douglas and finish in Girvan and include its criterion stage as stage two and lengthy stage from Moffat to Annan for the final day.
Moffat community council chairwoman Jean Purves was pleased to learn the event would return to the town.
She said: “It’s good and it something that brings people to the town.
“Hopefully this time the weather will be better because last year it was absolutely bucketing down.
“Last year a lot of people came to the town for it and hopefully they’ll come again.”
Mr Sinclair added: “We are hoping that spectators from all over will join what has become one of the best supported premier calendar events at Easter.”
The new sponsors are Magnox and South Ayrshire Council.
